New National Standard for Electric Vehicles and Scooters109


In order to ensure the safety and quality of electric vehicles and scooters, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Standardization Administration of China jointly issued the new national standard GB 17761-2018 "Electric Bicycles Safety Technical Specifications" and GB/T 21732-2018 "Electric Scooters Safety Technical Specifications" on July 16, 2018, which replaced the previous standards.

The new national standard came into effect on January 1, 2019. According to the new standard, an electric vehicle is defined as a vehicle with a motor power of less than 250W, a maximum speed of less than 25km/h, and a foot pedal. An electric scooter is defined as a vehicle with a motor power of less than 1200W, a maximum speed of less than 50km/h, and no pedals.

The new national standard has introduced a number of new regulations, including:
Speed limit: The maximum speed of electric bicycles is limited to 25km/h, and the maximum speed of electric scooters is limited to 50km/h.
Motor power: The motor power of electric bicycles is limited to 250W, and the motor power of electric scooters is limited to 1200W.
Brake system: Electric bicycles and electric scooters must be equipped with both front and rear brakes, and the brakes must meet the specified performance requirements.
Lighting system: Electric bicycles and electric scooters must be equipped with a front light, a rear light, and a side reflector. The lighting system must meet the specified performance requirements.
Weight: The maximum weight of electric bicycles is 55kg, and the maximum weight of electric scooters is 80kg.

The new national standard is expected to improve the safety and quality of electric vehicles and scooters, and to reduce the number of accidents. It is also expected to promote the development of the electric vehicle and scooter industry.
