Car Radio Aux Input Wiring Guide97
Adding an auxiliary input to your car radio is a great way to connect your music player, phone, or other audio device. It's a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours with basic tools and materials.
Here's what you'll need:
Car radio with an auxiliary input
3.5mm audio cable
Wire strippers
Electrical tape
Soldering iron (optional)
Once you have your materials, follow these steps:
Remove the car radio from the dash. This is usually done by removing a few screws or bolts and then pulling the radio out.
Locate the auxiliary input on the back of the radio. It will usually be labeled "AUX" or "INPUT".
Cut the 3.5mm audio cable to the desired length. You'll want it to be long enough to reach from the radio to your audio device, but not so long that it gets in the way.
Strip about 1/4 inch of insulation from each end of the audio cable.
Tin the wires by applying a small amount of solder to each one. This will make it easier to connect the wires to the radio.
Connect the wires to the auxiliary input on the radio. The left channel wire (usually white) goes to the left input, and the right channel wire (usually red) goes to the right input. The ground wire (usually black) can be connected to any ground point on the radio.
Solder the wires together, if desired. This will create a more secure connection.
Wrap the connections with electrical tape.
Reinstall the car radio into the dash.
Connect your audio device to the auxiliary input using the 3.5mm audio cable.
Enjoy your music!
Here are some additional tips:
If your car radio does not have an auxiliary input, you can purchase an aftermarket adapter that will add one.
If you are having trouble connecting the wires, consult the owner's manual for your car radio or consult with a qualified technician.
Once you have installed the auxiliary input, you can use it to connect any audio device that has a 3.5mm audio output.
