Why Does My Windshield Washer Not Work?26

A windshield washer is a device that sprays a cleaning solution onto the windshield of a vehicle to remove dirt, dust, and other debris. It is an important safety feature, as it helps the driver to see clearly while driving. However, like any other mechanical device, windshield washers can sometimes malfunction. One of the most common problems is that the washer may stop working altogether. If this happens, there are a few things you can check to troubleshoot the problem.

1. Check the fluid level. The first thing you should do is check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir. If the reservoir is empty, the washer will not be able to spray any fluid. Simply fill the reservoir with windshield washer fluid and try again.

2. Check the fuse. The windshield washer is powered by a fuse. If the fuse blows, the washer will not work. To check the fuse, locate the fuse box in your vehicle and find the fuse that is labeled "windshield washer." If the fuse is blown, replace it with a new one of the same amperage.

3. Check the pump. The windshield washer pump is responsible for pumping the fluid from the reservoir to the nozzles. If the pump is not working, the washer will not be able to spray any fluid. To check the pump, disconnect the electrical connector from the pump and touch the two terminals with a multimeter. If the multimeter reads 12 volts, the pump is working properly. If the multimeter does not read 12 volts, the pump is faulty and needs to be replaced.

4. Check the nozzles. The windshield washer nozzles are responsible for spraying the fluid onto the windshield. If the nozzles are clogged, the washer will not be able to spray any fluid. To check the nozzles, simply remove them from the vehicle and inspect them for any clogs. If the nozzles are clogged, clean them out with a small wire or needle.

5. Check the hoses. The windshield washer hoses are responsible for transporting the fluid from the reservoir to the nozzles. If the hoses are cracked or damaged, the washer will not be able to spray any fluid. To check the hoses, simply inspect them for any cracks or damage. If the hoses are cracked or damaged, replace them with new ones.

If you have checked all of the above items and the windshield washer is still not working, you may need to take your vehicle to a mechanic for further diagnosis. The mechanic will be able to identify the problem and repair it.
