How to Sharpen a Chainsaw Chain That‘s Still Not Cutting131

Chainsaws are essential tools for cutting through wood, but only if they're sharp. A dull chainsaw chain will make cutting difficult and dangerous. If you've sharpened your chainsaw chain and it's still not cutting, there are a few things you can check.

1. Check the Chain Tension

The chain tension is one of the most important factors in chainsaw performance. If the chain is too loose, it will slip off the bar and could cause damage to the saw. If the chain is too tight, it will bind up and make cutting difficult. The correct chain tension is usually specified in the chainsaw's manual.

To check the chain tension, pull the chain away from the bar by hand. There should be about 1/16" of play. If there is more or less play, adjust the chain tension according to the manufacturer's instructions.

2. Check the Chain Sharpness

Even if you've just sharpened your chainsaw chain, it's always possible that it's still not sharp enough. Use a file guide to check the sharpness of the chain. The file guide should be held at a 30-degree angle to the bar, and the file should be pushed forward with even pressure. If the file doesn't bite into the metal, the chain is not sharp enough.

If the chain is not sharp enough, you will need to sharpen it again. Use a chainsaw sharpening tool or a file and file guide to sharpen the chain. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for sharpening the chain.

3. Check the Chain Oil

Chain oil is essential for lubricating the chain and bar. If the chain is not properly lubricated, it will wear out quickly and could cause damage to the saw. Check the chain oil level before each use, and add oil as needed.

To check the chain oil level, look at the oil tank on the side of the saw. The oil level should be between the "full" and "empty" marks. If the oil level is low, add oil until it reaches the "full" mark.

4. Check the Bar

The bar is the metal rail that the chain runs on. If the bar is bent or damaged, it could cause the chain to bind up and make cutting difficult. Inspect the bar for any damage, and replace it if necessary.

5. Check the Engine

If you've checked all of the above and the chainsaw is still not cutting, the problem could be with the engine. Check the spark plug, air filter, and fuel filter. If any of these components are dirty or damaged, it could cause the engine to run poorly and affect the chainsaw's performance.

If you're not sure how to check or replace these components, consult the chainsaw's manual or take it to a qualified repair technician.
