Introduction

Earflap hats are a classic winter accessory that can keep your head and ears warm in even the coldest weather. They're also relatively easy to knit, making them a great project for beginners. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to knit an earflap hat using worsted weight yarn and size US 8 (5mm) circular needles.

Size US 8 (5mm) circular needles
Stitch marker
Tapestry needle

Instructions

Ribbing

Cast on 112 stitches onto your circular needles.

Knit 1, purl 1 for 6 rounds.

Body of the Hat

Change to stockinette stitch (knit every round).

Knit until the piece measures about 6 inches (15 cm) from the cast-on edge.

Crown Decreases

Round 1: *Knit 12, knit 2 together*; repeat from * to * around the round. (104 stitches)

Round 2: Knit all stitches.

Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until there are 8 stitches remaining on the needle.

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the crown.

Earflaps

Pick up and knit 36 stitches around the edge of one earflap.

Knit until the earflap measures about 6 inches (15 cm) deep.

Bind off all stitches.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other earflap.

Finishing

Fold the brim of the hat up and stitch it in place using the tapestry needle.

Weave in any loose ends.

Congratulations!
