Knitted Earflap Hat Tutorial17

The knitted earflap hat is a classic winter essential that keeps your head and ears warm and cozy. It is a relatively easy project to knit, making it a great choice for beginners and experienced knitters alike. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the steps of knitting an earflap hat, providing clear instructions and helpful tips.

Materials You Will Need:- Worsted weight yarn in your desired color: 150-200 yards
- Knitting needles: US size 8 (5mm) circular needles, 16-inch or 24-inch length
- Tapestry needle

Abbreviations Used:- CO: Cast on
- K: Knit
- P: Purl
- K2tog: Knit two stitches together
- P2tog: Purl two stitches together
- BO: Bind off

Instructions:

1. Cast On and Knit the Ribbing:

CO 90 stitches. Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Knit 10 rounds in rib stitch (K1, P1).

2. Knit the Earflaps:

Divide the stitches into three sections: 30 stitches for each earflap and the remaining 30 stitches for the top of the hat. Knit 10 rounds in stockinette stitch (every row knit) on the first 30 stitches (earflap 1). Place the remaining stitches on a stitch holder. Repeat for the second earflap.

3. Knit the Top of the Hat:

With the stitches for the top of the hat still on the needles, knit in stockinette stitch for 10 rounds.

4. Join the Earflaps:

Remove the earflaps from the stitch holders and knit them together with the stitches for the top of the hat. Join the first and second earflaps using the three-needle bind-off method. Repeat for the third and fourth earflaps.

5. Shape the Crown:

To shape the crown, begin decreasing stitches on every other round. Knit to the last two stitches before the first earflap, K2tog. Knit the stitches for the first earflap. Continue knitting around the hat, K2tog at the end of every other round before each earflap. Repeat this process until there are only 10 stitches remaining.

6. Bind Off:

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of about 6 inches. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to BO.

7. Finish:

Weave in any loose ends. Your knitted earflap hat is now complete!

Tips:- To make a smaller or larger hat, adjust the number of stitches cast on. For a smaller hat, CO 80 stitches, and for a larger hat, CO 100 stitches.
- Use a worsted weight yarn specifically designed for knitting hats. This type of yarn will provide warmth and durability.
- If you do not have circular needles, you can use straight needles and seam the hat together later.
- Take your time and follow the instructions carefully. Knitting can be relaxing and rewarding, so enjoy the process!
