Materials:
Worsted weight yarn (approx. 150 yards)
Size 8 (5mm) knitting needles
Yarn needle

Gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches (10cm)

Instructions:

Step 1: Cast on


Cast on 96 stitches.

Step 2: Ribbing


Knit 1, purl 1 for 4 rows.

Step 3: Crown Shaping


Row 1:


Knit 12, *knit 2 together, knit 12; repeat from * to the end of the row.

Row 2:


Purl 11, *purl 2 together, purl 11; repeat from * to the end of the row.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2


Until there are 24 stitches remaining on the needles.

Step 4: Shaping the Ear Flaps


Left Ear Flap:


Bind off 12 stitches at the beginning of the next row.

Knit to the end of the row.

Knit 20 rows.

Bind off all stitches.

Right Ear Flap:


Bind off 12 stitches at the end of the next row.

Knit to the beginning of the row.

Knit 20 rows.

Bind off all stitches.

Step 5: Top of Hat


Join the left and right ear flaps by picking up and knitting together the live stitches on the edges of each flap.

Knit around in the round for 3 rounds.

Bind off all stitches.

Step 6: Finishing


Weave in loose ends.

Sew a pom-pom or embellishment to the top of the hat, if desired.

Tips:
You can adjust the size of the hat by casting on more or fewer stitches as needed.
