Earflap hats are a great way to keep your child's head and ears warm in the winter. They are relatively easy to make, even if you are a beginner sewist. The following instructions will show you how to punch a child's earflap hat.

Materials* 1/2 yard of fabric
* 1/4 yard of lining fabric
* Matching thread
* Scissors
* Rotary cutter
* Cutting mat
* Ruler or measuring tape
* Sewing machine
* Iron and ironing board
* Hat brim (optional)

Instructions

1. Cut out the hat pieces


* From the main fabric, cut out two hat pieces. Each piece should be 18 inches wide by 12 inches tall.
* From the lining fabric, cut out two lining pieces. Each piece should be 18 inches wide by 12 inches tall.

2. Sew the hat pieces together


* Place the right sides of the hat pieces together and sew around the edges, leaving a 2-inch opening at the bottom for turning.
* Trim the seam allowances to 1/4 inch.
* Turn the hat right side out and press.

3. Sew the lining pieces together


* Place the right sides of the lining pieces together and sew around the edges, leaving a 2-inch opening at the bottom for turning.

* Turn the lining right side out and press.

4. Insert the lining into the hat


* Insert the lining into the hat and match up the seams.
* Pin the lining to the hat all around the edges.

* Turn the hat right side out and press.

5. Punch the earflaps


* Fold the hat in half, matching up the side seams.
* Measure 3 inches from the top of the hat and mark the spot.
* Use a hole punch to punch two holes, 1 inch apart, on the marked spot.
* Repeat on the other side of the hat.

6. Thread the earflaps


* Cut two pieces of yarn or ribbon, each 18 inches long.
* Thread one end of each yarn through one of the holes on the side of the hat.
* Thread the other end of each yarn through the other hole on the same side of the hat.
* Tie the two ends of each yarn together.

7. Add a hat brim (optional)


* If desired, you can add a hat brim to your hat. To do this, cut a piece of fabric 3 inches wide by 18 inches long.
* Fold the fabric in half lengthwise and press.
* Open up the fabric and fold the raw edges in by 1/4 inch. Press.
* Fold the fabric in half again, bringing the folded edges together. Press.
* Sew the brim to the hat around the bottom edge, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

8. Finishing touches


* Press the hat brim to finish.
* You can also add other embellishments to your hat, such as a pompom or a tassel.
