How to Cut and Sew a Children‘s Earflap Hat310

Children's earflap hats are a great way to keep kids warm and cozy in the winter. They are also relatively easy to make, even for beginners. In this tutorial, we will show you how to cut and sew a child's earflap hat.

Materials
1/2 yard of fleece fabric
1/4 yard of lining fabric
Thread
Sewing machine
Scissors
Measuring tape or ruler
Fabric marker or chalk

Instructions
Measure the child's head circumference. Add 2 inches to this measurement for overlap. This will be the length of the hat band.
Cut two pieces of fleece fabric that are the length of the hat band and 6 inches wide. These will be the hat band and the brim.
Cut two pieces of lining fabric that are the same size as the fleece pieces.
Place the fleece and lining pieces right sides together. Sew around the edges, leaving a 2-inch opening for turning. Trim the corners and turn the hat right side out.
Fold the brim up by 2 inches and press. Topstitch around the edge of the brim.
Cut two circles of fleece fabric that are 6 inches in diameter. These will be the earflaps.
Cut two circles of lining fabric that are 5 inches in diameter.
Place the fleece and lining pieces right sides together. Sew around the edges, leaving a 2-inch opening for turning. Trim the corners and turn the earflaps right side out.
Fold the raw edges of the earflaps under by 1/2 inch and press. Topstitch around the edges of the earflaps.
Pin the earflaps to the hat, positioning them evenly on either side of the hat band. Sew the earflaps to the hat.
Fold the hat band in half and sew the ends together. Turn the hat band right side out and press.
Pin the hat band to the hat, aligning the raw edges. Sew the hat band to the hat.

Tips
For a more durable hat, use a heavier weight fleece fabric.
If you don't have a sewing machine, you can hand-stitch the hat.
You can add embellishments to the hat, such as buttons, pom-poms, or embroidery.
This hat is also suitable for adults. Simply increase the measurements to fit your head circumference.
