How to Make a Kids Bucket Hat With Ear Flaps294
A bucket hat with ear flaps is a great way to keep your child's head and ears warm and protected from the sun and wind. It's also a fun and easy project to make. Here's how to do it:
Materials* 1/2 yard of fabric
* 1/4 yard of lining fabric
* 1/4 yard of fusible interfacing
* 1 package of bias tape
* Thread
* Scissors
* Measuring tape or ruler
* Pencil or fabric marker
* Sewing machine
Instructions1. Cut out the hat pieces. From the main fabric, cut out two circles with a diameter of 12 inches. From the lining fabric, cut out two circles with a diameter of 11 inches. From the fusible interfacing, cut out two circles with a diameter of 10 inches.
2. Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of one of the main fabric circles. This will give the hat some structure.
3. Sew the two main fabric circles together around the edge, leaving a 3-inch opening for turning.
4. Turn the hat right side out and press the seam.
5. Fold the lining fabric circles in half and sew them together around the edge, leaving a 3-inch opening for turning.
6. Turn the lining right side out and press the seam.
7. Insert the lining into the hat and sew the two together around the edge, close to the opening.
8. Fold the raw edges of the opening inward and sew them together to close the hole.
9. Cut four pieces of bias tape, each 12 inches long. Fold the bias tape in half and sew it to the edge of the hat, between the main fabric and the lining. This will create the ear flaps.
10. Fold the ear flaps up and sew them together at the top.
11. Your bucket hat with ear flaps is now complete!
Tips* You can use any type of fabric you like for the hat, but a lightweight cotton or linen will work best.
* If you don't have any fusible interfacing, you can use a piece of cardboard or plastic instead.
* You can add a brim to the hat by cutting out a circle of fabric with a diameter of 14 inches. Sew the brim to the edge of the hat, right side to right side.
* You can also add a chin strap to the hat by cutting a piece of ribbon or fabric 18 inches long. Fold the ribbon in half and sew it to the inside of the hat, near the ear flaps.
Variations* You can make the hat any size you want by adjusting the diameter of the circles.
* You can add a pom-pom or other embellishments to the top of the hat.
* You can make the ear flaps longer or shorter, depending on how much coverage you want.
