How to Knit a Baby Earflap Hat for a One-Year-Old364

Yarn: 100g of worsted weight yarn in two colors (I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Denim and White)

Needles: US size 9 (5.5mm) circular needles, 16" or 24" long

Gauge: 16 stitches and 20 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Size: One size fits most one-year-oldsInstructions:

Cast on: With white yarn, cast on 80 stitches.

Join in the round: Join the cast-on row with a slip stitch to form a round.

Knit in the round: Knit all 80 stitches for 10 rounds.
Begin earflaps:

Next round: *K2, K2tog, YO, repeat from * around. (60 stitches)

Next round: K all stitches.

Repeat these two rounds for 10 more times. (40 stitches)
Shape crown:

Next round: *K2tog, K2, repeat from * around. (30 stitches)

Next round: K all stitches.

Repeat these two rounds until there are 10 stitches remaining.

Break yarn and thread through remaining stitches to close.
Make earflaps:

With denim yarn, pick up 15 stitches along one edge of the hat, and knit in the round.

Repeat this on the other edge of the hat.

Knit both earflaps for 10 rounds.

Bind off all stitches.
Fold and stitch earflaps: Fold each earflap in half and stitch the edges together.

Attach the earflaps to the hat by sewing them onto the sides.
Add a pom-pom (optional): Make a pom-pom using denim yarn. Attach the pom-pom to the top of the hat with a few stitches.

Tips:

To make the hat bigger or smaller, adjust the number of stitches you cast on and knit in the round.

To make a different style of earflap, you can experiment with different shaping methods.

For a more winter-ready hat, use a thicker yarn or add a lining.

Enjoy your new baby earflap hat!
