Knitting a Boy‘s Trapper Hat20


Trapper hats are the perfect winter hat for keeping your child's head and ears warm. They're easy to knit and make great gifts or donations for those in need.

This pattern is for a boy's trapper hat that fits a head circumference of about 20 inches. You will need:
1 skein of worsted weight yarn in the main color
1 skein of worsted weight yarn in a contrasting color for the ear flaps
US size 8 knitting needles
Yarn needle

Instructions:

Cast on 96 stitches with the main color yarn.

Knit 1x1 ribbing (knit 1, purl 1) for 3 inches.

Switch to the contrasting color yarn and knit 1 row.

Knit 1x1 ribbing for 1 inch.

Switch back to the main color yarn and knit 1 row.

Knit 1x1 ribbing for 1 inch.

Bind off all stitches.

Fold the hat in half and sew up the side seams.

Fold the bottom edge of the hat up by about 2 inches and sew it down.

Cut two pieces of the contrasting color yarn that are each about 24 inches long.

Thread the yarn pieces through the holes in the sides of the hat and tie them together at the top.

Your boy's trapper hat is now complete!

Variations:
You can use any type of worsted weight yarn for this hat.
You can make the hat longer or shorter by adding or subtracting rows to the ribbing section.
You can add a pom-pom to the top of the hat.
You can make the ear flaps longer or shorter by adding or subtracting rows to the 1x1 ribbing section.
