Stye on Eyelash: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment203

Introduction

A stye is a small, painful bump that forms on the edge of the eyelid. It is caused by a bacterial infection of the eyelash follicle. Styes are common and can affect people of all ages. They are usually not serious, but they can be uncomfortable and may interfere with vision.

Causes

Styes are caused by bacteria, usually Staphylococcus aureus. The bacteria can enter the eyelash follicle through a small cut or scrape. Once inside the follicle, the bacteria multiply and cause inflammation. This inflammation leads to the formation of a stye.

Symptoms

The symptoms of a stye include:
A small, painful bump on the edge of the eyelid
Redness and swelling of the eyelid
Tenderness to the touch
Tearing
Blurred vision

Treatment

Most styes will resolve on their own within a few days. However, there are some things you can do to help speed up the healing process:
Apply a warm compress to the stye for 10-15 minutes several times a day.
Gently massage the stye to help drain the pus.
Avoid wearing contact lenses until the stye is healed.
Use antibiotic eye drops or ointment if the stye is severe or does not improve with home treatment.

Prevention

There are a number of things you can do to help prevent styes:
Wash your hands frequently, especially before touching your eyes.
Avoid sharing towels or other personal items with someone who has a stye.
Remove eye makeup before going to bed.
Keep your contact lenses clean and disinfected.
See your doctor if you have a stye that does not improve with home treatment.

Complications

In rare cases, a stye can lead to a more serious infection, such as cellulitis or a chalazion. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the skin and soft tissues around the eye. A chalazion is a blocked oil gland in the eyelid. Both of these conditions can be treated with antibiotics.

Outlook

Most styes will resolve on their own within a few days. However, it is important to see your doctor if you have a stye that does not improve with home treatment or if you have any other symptoms, such as fever, chills, or pain.
