How to Crochet Earflap Hat365

Crocheted earflap hats are a great way to keep your head and ears warm in the winter. Plus, they're super easy to make! If you're a beginner, this is a great project to start with. And if you're an experienced crocheter, you can easily customize the hat to your liking. This hat is made with a simple single crochet stitch, and it's worked in the round. The earflaps are added at the end. Let's get started!

Materials

To make this hat, you will need:
1 skein of worsted weight yarn
A crochet hook that is appropriate for the yarn you are using
A tapestry needle

Stitches Used

Single crochet (sc)
Slip stitch (sl st)
Half double crochet (hdc)
Double crochet (dc)
Treble crochet (tr)

Finished Size

The finished hat will fit an average adult head. It can be adjusted to fit a smaller or larger head by changing the number of stitches in the foundation chain and/or the number of rows crocheted.

Gauge

4 stitches and 5 rows = 1 inch

Instructions

Foundation chain: Chain 160.
Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. (159 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in the back loop of each sc across. (159 sc)
Rows 3-6: Repeat Row 2. (159 sc)

Earflaps

Next, we will make the earflaps.
Row 1: Ch 40, turn. Sc in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. (39 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in the back loop of each sc across. (39 sc)
Rows 3-8: Repeat Row 2. (39 sc)
Leave a long tail and fasten off. Make one earflap. Repeat the steps to make the second earflap.

Finishing

Sew the earflaps to the hat. Fold the top edge of the hat down by about 1 inch and sew it in place. Weave in any loose ends. That's it! You're all done!

Tips

I used medium-weight yarn and a 4.5mm hook to make this hat. You can use any type of yarn and hook that you like.
If you want a smaller or larger hat, adjust the number of stitches in the foundation chain and/or the number of rows crocheted.
You can customize the hat to your liking by adding embellishments such as pom-poms, tassels, or buttons.
