How to Read a Blood Pressure Monitor13

Blood pressure is a measure of the force exerted by your blood against the walls of your arteries. It is measured in two numbers: systolic and diastolic. Systolic pressure is the pressure when your heart beats, and diastolic pressure is the pressure when your heart rests between beats. Blood pressure is usually measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).

A normal blood pressure reading is less than 120/80 mm Hg. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is when your blood pressure is consistently 130/80 mm Hg or higher. Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and other health problems.

If you have high blood pressure, it is important to get it under control. There are a number of lifestyle changes you can make to lower your blood pressure, such as:
Eating a healthy diet
Getting regular exercise
Maintaining a healthy weight
Quitting smoking
Reducing stress

If lifestyle changes are not enough to lower your blood pressure, your doctor may prescribe medication.

How to Read a Blood Pressure Monitor

Blood pressure monitors are devices that measure your blood pressure. There are two main types of blood pressure monitors: manual and automatic. Manual blood pressure monitors require you to use a stethoscope to listen to your pulse while you inflate a cuff around your arm. Automatic blood pressure monitors do all the work for you. They inflate the cuff and measure your blood pressure automatically.

To read a blood pressure monitor, follow these steps:
Sit in a comfortable chair with your feet flat on the floor and your back supported.
Wrap the cuff around your upper arm, about 1-2 inches above your elbow.
Close the cuff and inflate it until the pressure gauge reaches 180 mm Hg.
Slowly release the pressure while listening for your pulse with the stethoscope. The first sound you hear is your systolic pressure.
Continue to release the pressure until you no longer hear your pulse. The last sound you hear is your diastolic pressure.

Record your blood pressure reading and compare it to the normal range. If your blood pressure reading is high, talk to your doctor.

Tips for Getting an Accurate Blood Pressure Reading

There are a few things you can do to get an accurate blood pressure reading:
Avoid caffeine and alcohol before having your blood pressure taken.
Don't smoke for at least 30 minutes before having your blood pressure taken.
Empty your bladder before having your blood pressure taken.
Rest for at least 5 minutes before having your blood pressure taken.
Take your blood pressure at the same time each day.

If you have any questions about how to read a blood pressure monitor, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
