How to Calibrate an Inaccurate Digital Blood Pressure Monitor135
A digital blood pressure monitor is a device that measures blood pressure. It consists of an inflatable cuff that is wrapped around the upper arm and a digital display that shows the blood pressure reading. Digital blood pressure monitors are generally accurate, but they can become inaccurate over time. If you think your digital blood pressure monitor is inaccurate, you can calibrate it yourself using the following steps:
Gather your materials. You will need a sphygmomanometer, a stethoscope, and a Phillips head screwdriver.
Inflate the cuff. Wrap the cuff around your upper arm and inflate it to 180 mmHg.
Listen for the Korotkoff sounds. Place the stethoscope over the brachial artery in your elbow and listen for the Korotkoff sounds. These are a series of tapping sounds that will occur as the cuff deflates.
Record the systolic and diastolic pressures. The systolic pressure is the first Korotkoff sound you hear. The diastolic pressure is the last Korotkoff sound you hear.
Deflate the cuff. Slowly deflate the cuff by opening the valve on the cuff.
Repeat steps 2-5 three times. This will give you three sets of systolic and diastolic pressure readings.
Calculate the average systolic and diastolic pressures. Add up the three systolic pressure readings and divide by three. Do the same for the diastolic pressure readings.
Compare your readings to the sphygmomanometer. The average systolic and diastolic pressure readings from your digital blood pressure monitor should be within 5 mmHg of the readings from the sphygmomanometer.
Calibrate your digital blood pressure monitor. If the readings from your digital blood pressure monitor are not within 5 mmHg of the readings from the sphygmomanometer, you will need to calibrate your monitor. To do this, use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the back of the monitor. Locate the calibration screw and turn it clockwise or counterclockwise until the readings from your monitor match the readings from the sphygmomanometer.
Replace the back of the monitor. Once you have calibrated your monitor, replace the back of the monitor and tighten the screws.
Your digital blood pressure monitor should now be calibrated and accurate. It is important to calibrate your monitor regularly to ensure that it is providing accurate readings.
