How to Use a Mercury Sphygmomanometer363
A mercury sphygmomanometer is a device used to measure blood pressure. It consists of an inflatable cuff, a mercury manometer, and a bulb and valve for inflating the cuff. Mercury sphygmomanometers are considered to be the most accurate type of blood pressure monitor, but they are also the most difficult to use. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to use a mercury sphygmomanometer:
Materials you'll need:
Mercury sphygmomanometer
Stethoscope
Pen and paper (optional)
Step 1: Prepare the patient
Have the patient sit in a comfortable chair with their arm resting on a table. The patient's arm should be supported at heart level. Make sure the patient is relaxed and has not smoked or consumed caffeine within the past 30 minutes.
Step 2: Apply the cuff
Wrap the cuff snugly around the patient's upper arm, about 1-2 inches above the elbow crease. The cuff should be tight enough to stop the flow of blood, but not so tight that it causes discomfort.
Step 3: Inflate the cuff
Close the valve on the bulb and squeeze the bulb until the mercury in the manometer rises to about 180 mmHg. This is the inflation pressure.
Step 4: Deflate the cuff slowly
Open the valve slightly and allow the mercury in the manometer to fall slowly. As the cuff deflates, listen for the Korotkoff sounds through the stethoscope. The Korotkoff sounds are a series of tapping sounds that occur when the blood starts to flow through the brachial artery.
Step 5: Record the blood pressure
The first Korotkoff sound is the systolic blood pressure. The last Korotkoff sound is the diastolic blood pressure. Record the blood pressure in mmHg.
Step 6: Repeat the measurement
Repeat the measurement at least twice to get an accurate reading. The two readings should be within 5 mmHg of each other.
Tips for using a mercury sphygmomanometer
Use a stethoscope with good acoustics.
Deflate the cuff slowly and evenly.
Listen for the Korotkoff sounds carefully.
Record the blood pressure accurately.
Have the blood pressure measurement checked by a healthcare professional if you are unsure of the results.
Warnings
Do not use a mercury sphygmomanometer if you are pregnant or have a history of heart disease.
Mercury is a toxic metal, so it is important to clean up any spills immediately.
