How to Use an Arm-Type Electronic Blood Pressure Monitor11
An arm-type electronic blood pressure monitor is a device used to measure blood pressure in the arteries of the upper arm. It is a common and convenient way to measure blood pressure at home or in a doctor's office. Here are the steps on how to use an arm-type electronic blood pressure monitor:
1. Choose the Right Arm
Use the arm that is not your dominant hand. For most people, this is the left arm.
2. Position the Cuff
Wrap the cuff snugly around your upper arm, about 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) above the elbow crease. The bottom edge of the cuff should be parallel to your heart.
3. Sit Up Straight
Sit in a comfortable chair with your feet flat on the floor. Rest your arm on a table or desk so that your upper arm is at heart level.
4. Position the Arm
Bend your arm at the elbow so that the cuff is at the same level as your heart.
5. Press the Start Button
Press the start button on the monitor.
6. Inflate the Cuff
The cuff will automatically inflate. Do not talk or move while the cuff is inflating.
7. Take the Measurement
The monitor will display your blood pressure reading when the cuff starts to deflate. The reading will consist of two numbers: the systolic pressure (the higher number) and the diastolic pressure (the lower number). The monitor may also display your pulse rate.
8. Record the Results
Write down your blood pressure reading and pulse rate in a journal or use the app provided by the manufacturer.
9. Deflate the Cuff
Press the deflation button on the monitor to release the air from the cuff.
10. Remove the Cuff
Unwrap the cuff from your arm.
